Winter in the midwest is officially upon us. Freezing temps, sleet, slush and the occasional fluffy snow can all be expected with our unpredictable winter weather patterns. However, the frigid temperatures don’t necessarily mean that fun has to be paused. In fact, there are lots of wondrous things that can be done in Kansas City during the winter. Whether you are a Kansas City native, thinking of relocating or visiting for the holidays, there are so many exciting things to do. Here are just a sample of ten ways to make winter memories in the City of Fountains.

Things to do in Kansas City: Ice Skating

For many people, winter brings fond memories of outdoor activities like ice skating. Crown Center Ice Terrace is a great public skating rink with $7 admission and $4 skate rental. Other options include KC Ice Center (which even offers classes), The Rink at Zona Rosa, Summit Ice in Lees Summit and The Ice at Park Place. There are a wealth of places to glide around the ice with the whole family!

Plaza Lights

After stopping for a skate, head over to The Plaza for a beautiful sight. For those wanting to truly experience a Kansas City tradition, you have to stop by and admire the Country Club Plaza lights. The lighting ceremony every Thanksgiving is one not to be missed. The 15 blocks of lights signal the magical spirit of the holidays and remain on until mid January. If you’re visiting the area, downtown hotels provide many spectacular views of the beautiful light display.

Kansas City Restaurant Week

Feeling hungry? Next, you’re definitely going to want to check out this delicious Kansas City tradition! Occurring in mid to late January (Jan. 13-22 this year), KC Restaurant Week provides opportunities to explore the area’s cuisine. Participating restaurants offer special multiple course menus at fixed prices, allowing you to sample delightful food from all sorts of different culinary options. It’s an amazing way to experience the culinary talent that Kansas City has to offer.

Kansas City Ballet

Ready to add a bit of culture to your winter? The Kansas City Ballet is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the arts scene. Located in the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, the ballet typically features a variety of performances during the winter months. A cornerstone of the KC Ballet is the Nutcracker, which runs from December 7th to 24th.

World War I Museum

The perfect winter activity for history buffs, the National World War I Museum and Memorial features interactive exhibits, artifacts, and presentations that chronicle World War I. It also offers a variety of rotating exhibitions and the War Remains virtual reality experience. The keystone of this museum is the Liberty Memorial. Be sure to go to the top of the tower for a beautiful view of Kansas City.

Nelson Atkins Museum of Art

A stunning museum that has something to please nearly everyone, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art includes art from around the world. From ancient to contemporary and modern, this is an impressive collection set in a stunning museum. The highlight for many people is the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park with over 80 structures spread throughout the grounds.

Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

If you love baseball, you will be enthralled with the history preserved by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Learn about players like Jackie Robinson (who got his start with the Kansas City Monarchs) at this museum that is packed with history. Be sure to check out the American Jazz Museum next door as well.

Skiing at Snow Creek

Skiers can rejoice that there is a wonderful ski resort just northwest of Kansas City. Snow Creek is found in Weston, Missouri. Never skied before? Take a lesson. Seasoned veteran? Grab your rental gear and lift ticket so you can hit the slopes. You’ll also find Tornado Alley Tubing Park, which is a hit for those young and old.

Watch the Penguins March

On weekends during the winter (and select days the rest of the year), the Kansas City Zoo’s Helzberg Penguin Plaza is home to a penguin march. Watch the zoo’s emperor penguins stroll around this area at Noon. This experience is included with admission. While there, see many other animals such as orangutans, elephants, and otters.

Take a Barbecue Tour

Kansas City is known for many things, but the city is perhaps most associated with delicious barbecue. With so many places producing mouth-watering fare, it is not surprising that there are many places that provide barbecue tours, allowing you to sample recipes from a number of different restaurants. Of course, you can always create your own as well.

As you can see, there is a ton of fun to be had in Kansas City this winter. Whether you are visiting for the holidays or here to stay, there are so many exciting things to do. We want to know, what are some of your favorites?
